Student Information

 

Eligibility

Community college students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics should contact their community college districts for information and application processes.

To participate you must be:

  • A U.S. citizen
  • At least 18 years of age and a high school graduate
  • A Texas resident
  • A community college student pursuing an initial undergraduate degree and who has not previously attended a CAS event
  • Enrolled or strongly interested in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics field
  • Able to commit to a one-semester relationship with NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), including a 2 day experience during the spring semester held in Houston at NASA JSC
  • Able to access the Internet (home, school, or public library)
  • Able to complete requirements as established by your community college district

Location

Selected individuals will attend a 2 day experience at JSC in Houston, Texas. This experience will provide the opportunity for participants to interact with students from across Texas with like interests and work on an exploration project.

  • Sept. - Feb. - time to apply
  • Nov. - Feb. - web based lessons
  • TBD by each community college district - community college district’s deadline
  • Feb. 5, 2010 - NASA JSC application deadline for community college districts
  • Feb. 2010 - NASA JSC notifies community college districts of its selection.
  • Feb. - Districts notify the selected scholars.  Interact with selected scholars through online community.
  • March - April - Event

Two-day experience at JSC:

  • March 18-19, 2010
  • March 25-26, 2010
  • April 8-9, 2010
  • April 15-16, 2010
  • April 22-23, 2010

Cost

NASA JSC covers all expenses for lodging, meals, and project supplies while at JSC.

Transportation to and from JSC and during the JSC experience is the responsibility of the district.

There is a nominal non-refundable/transferable registration fee for each participant.

Preparation

Students will be required to complete pre-work prior to their arrival at JSC. This pre-work will help the scholars familiarize themselves with different aspects of the space program.

Information Request

Each community college district has appointed a CAS Point of Contact (POC) and established the district’s procedures and application. Interested students should complete the NASA JSC Information Request Form on-line. In the electronic receipt confirmation, release statements will be attached. Students will need to print out, read, sign and submit this document to their district’s POC and inquire on the specific application process. Each district will nominate multiple students. POCs will electronically submit the district’s application and mail the release statements and registration fees to NASA JSC.
