| Hi!
My name is Irene Piatek and I’ve been at NASA for about 21 years
now. I have a Bachelor’s degree
in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and
a Master of Science degree in Physical Sciences from the University of Houston
- Clear Lake. I work on both
the Space Shuttle and Space Station programs in the Engineering Directorate.
I am currently the Project Manager for the Shuttle and Station Wireless
Video Systems, otherwise known as ‘helmet cam’.
The Shuttle system flew for the first time on STS-97 in December
2000. The Station version is
schedule to fly in August 2002. I
also supervise a group of engineers who perform a wide variety of tasks.
Everything from payload safety, electrical power system load calculations,
to ensuring that the Boeing provided Space Station hardware is acceptable
for final purchase by NASA. My
background includes work on Shuttle fuel cells and cryogenic oxygen and
hydrogen tanks, Shuttle and Station electrical systems, Station data system
architecture, visiting vehicle and Crew Return Vehicle requirements documentation,
assembly sequence, and operations. I have two daughters,
one a sophomore in high school, the other in 6th grade, three
cats, a dog, and a goldfish pond in my backyard.
I enjoy reading, traveling and needlework of almost every variety.
I also mentor one 3 -5th grader every year at a local
elementary school to help them learn the language skills they’ll need
to succeed.
