John Schanck - Co-op

HAS 2001 - 2002

    John Schanck

Howdy! My name is John Schanck and I am going to be the co-op assistant for the Red Team during the week of June 18-22.  I have just finished my first tour here at Johnson Space Center (JSC), and it has been an awesome experience.  This past spring I worked in the Thermal Branch (ES3) of the Structures and Mechanics Division performing thermal analysis for various spacecraft, which just means that I made sure that spacecraft I worked on didn’t get too hot or too cold.  I have just started my second tour at JSC in the Power Systems Branch (EP5), where I will spend the next three months of my life using powerful explosives to blow stuff up.

I am originally from this great state of Texas, more importantly I was born in America’s Space City, for those of you who don’t know where that is, it’s Houston.  I’m a junior at Texas A&M University, home of the Fightin’ Texas Aggies, WHOOP!!!  I am studying to get a Bachelors Degree in Aerospace Engineering.  For most of my life I’ve wanted to be a fighter pilot or an astronaut, but my vision wasn’t good enough, so I decided that if I couldn’t fly the planes then I’m going to design them.  I always wanted to work at JSC because I love the Space program and I love to solve problems, which is what engineers do.

I have several hobbies my favorite of which is SCUBA diving.  I have been diving since I was 16, and next year when I come back to JSC, I will be SCUBA diving and helping to train astronauts in the world’s largest pool at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL).  I love to travel, I’ve been all over the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe.  I am also working towards getting my pilots license (I have about 35 hours in the air).

I can’t wait to meet and work with all of you, because were going to have a lot of fun. See ya’ll in a couple of weeks.
