Hi, I’m Ron Burgess and I am THE MATH TEACHER at Skidmore-Tynan

Hi! I’m Ron Burgess and I teach Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus at Skidmore-Tynan High School. I am also the technology coordinator for the entire district.

I was born and raised in Port Lavaca, Texas and I graduated from Calhoun High School in 1973. I attended Victoria College and I graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. I came to Skidmore in 1979 as the band director and I stayed in that position for about 15 years. While I was the band director, I went back to Victoria College and the University of Houston/Victoria and received my math certification. I became a full time math teacher 9 years ago. I taught math in our junior high for 6 years and I have taught math in high school for the past 3 years.

In 1995, I was a NEWMAST participant at JSC. For two weeks I thought that I had died and gone to heaven. I have been a supporter of the space program since I was 6 years old (that’s when Alan Sheppard became the first American in space). During the Apollo missions, I had to sneak into the living room after my parents went to bed to watch the astronauts do their thing on the moon.

I married a childhood friend in 1977, Rita, and we have two boys, Jeremy, who is 19 and Brandon, who is 15. Jeremy is attending LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. He is a flight science major. He has his private pilot’s license and he is obtaining his certifications to become an airline pilot. Brandon is a freshman. He is in the band and he plays basketball, baseball, and video games…..he’s a typical “goofy” freshman.

I am looking forward to returning to NASA this summer. I hope that some of my enthusiasm for the space program can rub off on the students.
