Liftoff!
On Orbit Ops

Shuttle Launch

Shuttle on launch pad

If you were the Shuttle pilot, how would you maneuver the spacecraft to the proper orbit in space to dock with the space station or to retrieve a faulty satellite?

This lesson will cover some of the on-orbit operations that are done on the Space Shuttle as it travels in low-Earth orbit. You will use a variety of 3-D and virtual models, interactive games and tutorials, videos, audios, and images to explore the Space Shuttle.

Some of the other questions you will answer in this lesson include:
  • What are some upgrades that have been made for the Space Shuttle?
  • How do you train to become an astronaut?
  • How do you feel in a weightless environment?
  • How do you eat and go to the bathroom in space?
  • What are future plans for the Shuttle and the Crew Exploration Vehicle?

For your research and design project, you will envision and describe a new design of a Crew Exploration Vehicle of the future.

In the Liftoff section are seven chapters to read and enjoy.  There are many images, links, videos and interactive models and games to link to on the internet. Don't forget to do the Quick Quiz! after you have done the reading. The Mission section is the activity that you need to turn in via the Comm Link. The Extended Mission is a collection of links on the topic that you can use for further information, it is divided up into two parts: Activities and Research.  When deciding on a topic for your final project, the extensions are a good starting point..
