Liftoff!
Robo-Nautics

intro.jpg

In this lesson, you will explore the spacecraft that have visited and studied the planet Mars. You will learn about mission objectives, spacecraft design, instrumentation, mission profiles, experiment packages, results and discoveries. You will learn about the successes and failures of both U.S. and international space agencies. Why did some missions fail, and what did we learn from these failures? Why were other missions successful, and what can we learn from these successes?

You will learn about the dangers and risks involved in sending robotic spacecrafts so many millions of miles from home. Finally, you will explore the past, present, and future Mars missions being planned by NASA and other international space agencies.

You will use a variety of 3-D and virtual models, interactive games and tutorials, videos, audios, and images to explore the red planet Mars. With an understanding of what types of missions have gone before and their discoveries, for your assignment you will design your own robotic mission based on your own questions about the red planet.
In the Liftoff section are chapters on each Mars mission to read and enjoy. There are many images, links, videos and interactive models and games to link to on the internet. The Mission section is the activity that you need to turn in via the Comm Link.Don't forget to do the Quick Quiz after you have done the reading. The Extended Mission is a collection of links on the topic that you can use for further information, it is divided up into Activities and Research.  When deciding on a final project the extensions are a good way to begin.
