Workshop Details

The MAS workshop is held at NASA Johnson Space Center. During the week long workshop participants can expect a fast paced, hands-on, active week.

The workshop will start on Sunday afternoon and continue through Friday afternoon. The typical workday (Monday - Thursday) will be from 7:30AM to 5:30PM, with slight variations as needed.

Participants will meet and learn from astronauts, scientist, engineers and program managers from the Space Shuttle program, Internation Space Station program, and the new Constellation program (space exploration). Behind the scene tours will also be arranged where participants can expect to see the "real time" operations in the work environment at the Johnson Space Center.

Teams are expected to develop cross curricular plans to be integrated into their curriculum during the following school year. Participants will work within their team as well as with the other teams participating in the program. A professional, cooperative, and supportive atmosphere with plenty of work time can be expected during the workshop.

More about NASA and the Johnson Space Center

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the central civilian agency that directs the United States space program. NASA began its operation on October 1, 1958, as a result of the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958.

The Johnson Space Center (JSC) has the following major responsibilities:

  • Selection and training of astronauts
  • Designing, developing, and testing spacecraft and associated systems for human space flight
  • Developing and managing scientific, engineering, life sciences, and earth resources investigations and space flight experiments
  • Operation of all human space flight missions through the Mission Control Center
JSC directs the development and operation of the Space Shuttle, a versatile and reusable space vehicle. JSC also manages major portions of the International Space Station, which is an orbiting platform on and from which we can conduct experiments.
